Miljuš Goran

Organization unit

Department of Metabolism

Profile/Academic degree

Bachelor of Chemistry, Doctor of Biochemical Sciences

Scientific/Research title

Senior Research Associate

Education

Graduated from the Faculty of Sciences at the University of Novi Sad, and received his doctorate in 2015 from the Faculty of Chemistry, University of Belgrade.

Research field

He is a member of a team of researchers engaged in fundamental and applied research related to insulin, insulin-like growth factors and other proteins involved in metabolic processes. Research activities are aimed at examining the impact of various physiological conditions and diseases on metabolism in humans and animals (aging, physical activity, pregnancy, diabetes, tumor, diseases accompanied by oxidative stress) and analysing the potential impact of small molecules from the microenvironment. The current research focus is on the structural and functional characterization of protein complexes formed by IGFBP-3 and transferrin (IGFBP-3/Tf), and determining their potential role in the origin and development of colorectal cancer (CRC) with special reference to the role of iron ions in the CRC pathology.

Professional engagement

Participating in national projects since 2009. In the last MoESTD project cycle participated in the following project: “Structural features of insulin-like growth factor (IGF) binding proteins and receptors, their interactions with other physiological molecules, and changes in metabolic disorders” (project number: 173042).
Participant of bilateral projects with the Slovak Republic: “Lectin biochips for characterization of glycan structure of the IGF system proteins as a tool for research, diagnostics and therapy of colorectal carcinoma” (2012-2013, 680-00-140/2012-09/01), “Determination of glycosylation changes of proteins related to colorectal carcinoma using modern sensitive lectin biochips with impact to cancer research, diagnostics and therapy” (2015-2016, 451-03-545/2015-09/01), “Glycan biomarkers analysis as a tool for biomedical research, follow-up and diagnosis of tumour diseases” (2017-2018, SK-SRB-2016-023) and “Analysis of transferrin glycoforms as potentially strong biomarkers in medicine” (2019-2020, 337-00-107/2019-09/12) of the multilateral scientific and technological cooperation project in the Danube region with the Republic of Slovakia and Austria: “The analysis of nucleic acids, proteins and metabolites as potential circulating biomarkers of gestational diabetes” (2020-2022, 337-00-00322/2019-09/151), and the project manager of the Science Fund project for the Serbian Science and Diaspora Collaboration Program: Knowledge Transfer Voucher: “Mass spectrometry analysis of serum transferrin in patients with an increased oxidative stress” (2020-2021). Participation in COST actions: CM1001-Chemistry of non-enzymatic protein modification – modulation of protein structure and function, CA15133-The Biogenesis of Iron-sulphur Proteins: from Cellular Biology to Molecular Aspects, CA16112-Personalized Nutrition in aging society: redox control of major age-related diseases, CA16205-European Network on Understanding Gastrointestinal Absorption-related Processes, CA18103-Innovation with glycans: new frontiers from synthesis to new biological targets i CA17118-Identifying biomarkers through translational research for prevention and stratification of colorectal cancer i CA22114-Maternal Perinatal Stress and Adverse Outcomes in the Offspring: Maximizing infants’ development (TREASURE, 2023-2027).
